Independent traders welcome our bid to revive city economy
A GROUP leading one of the largest concentrations of small, independent businesses in the city has welcomed the Bristol Post's Going for Growth campaign.
The Bedminster Business Improvement District, which covers the area's three main shopping thoroughfares of East Street, North Street and West Street, has backed the campaign's giveaway of £25 million to expanding firms.
Simon Dicken, who is set to be named chairman of Bedminster BID's board, said any scheme which encouraged businesses to grow or rewarded ambition was important.
The campaign, which was launched earlier this month, is being run by the Bristol Post in partnership with the West of England Local Enterprise Partnership.
The LEP has a fund of £25 million to give to firms that are looking to grow – with the only catch being that successful applicants have to prove that they are creating new jobs or safeguarding existing ones.

Companies can apply for grants of between £10,000 and £1 million, providing they prove the money will help the firm grow or will be used to fund research and development.
The aim is to sign up around 400 firms for the project. Companies have until the end of July to apply for funding from the LEP pot.
Mr Dicken, who runs a shop in East Street, believes many of the 450 firms in the Bedminster area would be interested in applying for a grant through Going for Growth
