Major survey carried out of businesses in area - Challenge is knowing how to grow
MOST firms in the Bristol area say one of the most important challenges they currently face is how to achieve growth in such a challenging and difficult economic environment.

A major survey has been carried out of businesses in the area – which has coincided with the Growing for Growth Campaign.

The campaign is being run by the West of England Local Enterprise Partnership with the backing of the Bristol Post and is looking to hand over £25 million to local businesses. The aim is to help businesses looking to expand with grants of anywhere between £10,000 and £1 million.

The firms have to prove they are creating or safeguarding jobs and the ultimate aim is to galvanise the economy of Bristol and the surrounding area back into life.

According to the survey from the GrowthAccelerator organisation more than half of firms in Bristol say a key challenge is knowing how to grow, with a third stating that defining a clear strategy for growth is seen as a major obstacle.
The Working On, Not In report found that 41 per cent of business leaders in Bristol do not have enough time to step back from the day-to-day, to focus on a long-term strategy or determine how best to grow.

The report also found that 40 per cent of business leaders in the city do not force themselves to work regularly, or even at all, on their business strategy.

Max Adam, director at GrowthAccelerator, said: "For business leaders, knowing the best way to achieve growth is a sizeable challenge and an added pressure in changeable economic times.

"This combined with the time consuming demands of ensuring a business is running smoothly on a day-to-day basis, means looking forward with longer term planning can slip down the to-do list but it is essential for success."...
